During the Vietnam War, this was the air base of the United States Air Force. After the Vietnam War ended, the airport was used for military and civilian purposes, serving flights to Nha Trang. After Cam Ranh Airport was upgraded and partly transformed into a civil airport, since 19 May 2004, civil flights to Nha Trang have been moved to Cam Ranh Airport. The land at the old airport was re-planned into a new urban area to meet the functions of trade, tourism, services and finance.
